Punch Drunk Love

Even though this movie won a prize at the Cannes Film festival, I hated it Like, I wanted my money back!

I think the fissure line runs right down the X and Y chromosomes: Guys will like it but women, especially if they've had an abusive boyfriend, will foam at the mouth.

Adam Sandler plays himself, the angry, lonely, misunderstood doofus. In this movie, however, the shy sadness elicits sorrow, not laughs. I have to admit Sandler does a really good job of being the person no one likes. For once, the Sandler persona has humanity. I felt the pain of every slight. He is tormented by his seven older sisters, a brilliant touch. One call to a phone sex operator turns into an extortion nightmare.

But Sandler's character can't control his pent up anger. When it gets out of hand, like smashing his sister's patio doors with a hammer, the movie condones his bad behavior. Kids, that's what's wrong with America!

Sorry, but I thought Sandler had no chemistry with Emily Watson. The director said he wanted to create a Saturday night date movie. He obviously knows nothing about women. I wouldn't give the guy a second date!

Philip Seymour Hoffman was great as the despicable phone sex owner. I wanted to see him glued to a wheelchair and set on fire like Red Dragon.

As Sandler's life degenerates, the music becomes percussive and dissonant. A great idea but very hard on the ears. The director does make good use of the song "He Needs Me" from the Popeye soundtrack as its central theme song.

An interesting fact: Sandler's idea of buying thousands of boxes of pudding to earn one million frequent flyer miles is a true story.

BE's Vegas Watch:

My premise: You can't make a movie without mentioning Las Vegas somehow. In this film, Sandler owns a company that makes specialty plungers. His newest product: plungers with dice glued to the top. Sandler brags he sold 700 to the Rio.

Save your money at the box office and rent these films:

My favorite Adam Sandler movies: Wedding Singer and Waterboy, I can't stand P.T. Anderson, but if confusion and dysfunction is your thing, rent his other movies: Boogie Nights and Magnolia.
